How to Test Your Home Security System: Quarterly Inspection Checklist

What to know first
- Put your system in test mode first so you do not trigger a real alarm dispatch.
- Test every sensor individually. Do not assume they all work because one does.
- Replace batteries proactively. A dead sensor is worse than no sensor.
Before You Start: Enable Test Mode
If you have professional monitoring, call them and put your account in test mode. Skipping this step and triggering a real alarm can cost you $50 to $250 in false alarm fines.
Test Every Sensor
Arm the system. Open every door and window with a sensor, one at a time. Watch the app to confirm each reports correctly. Walk through every room with a motion sensor. Check camera live feeds and confirm motion detection alerts arrive on your phone.
- Door/window sensors: open each one and verify it reports within 2 seconds.
- Motion sensors: walk through each zone from multiple angles.
- Cameras: check live feed, aim, night vision (test after dark), and that clips are saving.

Check Batteries and Backup Power
Most security hubs have a backup battery for power outages. Check its status in the app. Replace sensor batteries proactively. Most use CR123A or CR2032. Buy a pack and replace them all at once during your quarterly test.
