Start With Upload Speed

People love quoting giant download numbers, but camera systems live and die on upload, signal strength, and consistency. One weak outdoor signal can absolutely be the reason clips fail or alerts show up late.

That is why I would clean up the network before replacing cameras in a lot of houses.

Where Camera Wi-Fi Usually Falls Apart

  • Front porches behind masonry or metal
  • Detached garages
  • Driveway corners far from the main router
  • Backyards where the router has to punch through too many walls

A Better Upgrade Order

Before buying more cameras, test the signal where the current one lives. If your phone struggles in that exact spot, the camera probably is too.

A better access point, smarter router placement, or one mesh node in the right place often does more than switching brands and hoping.

My Rule of Thumb

If cameras are mission-critical, build the network around the cameras first. It is not the fun purchase, but it is usually the one that makes the rest of the setup stop acting flaky.
