Weatherproofing: IP Ratings Explained

IP65 means dustproof and protected against water jets. IP67 adds temporary submersion. For most outdoor installations, IP65 is enough. Do not mount an indoor camera outside.

Night Vision Types

Standard infrared uses invisible IR LEDs for black-and-white footage. Spotlight cameras use a visible white LED for color footage at night but alert intruders. Starlight sensors amplify ambient light for color footage without illumination, but struggle in truly dark locations.

  • IR: invisible, black and white, works everywhere.
  • Spotlight: visible, color footage, doubles as deterrent.
  • Starlight: no light needed, color in ambient light, needs some streetlight or moonlight.
  • Dual mode: best of both worlds, switches automatically.

Resolution and Power

2K (2560x1440) is the sweet spot. Enough detail for faces at 25+ feet and plates at 20 feet. Wired cameras are most reliable. Solar with battery backup is the best compromise for locations where running wire is impractical.
