The Three Things That Actually Matter
Field of view, night vision quality, and whether it needs a subscription. Everything else - 2-way audio, motion zones, person detection - every doorbell camera in 2026 has these. They are not differentiators anymore.
Field of view determines how much of your porch the camera sees. Under 150 degrees and you have blind spots where someone can stand to the side and not be recorded. 160-180 degrees covers the full porch on most homes.
Ring Video Doorbell
The default choice, and it earned that position. The app is solid, Alexa integration is deep (live view on Echo Show, announcements when someone presses the button), and the Ring Protect plan ($40/year) includes video history for all Ring devices on your account.
The catches: you need the subscription to review recorded video. Without it, you only see live view. And Ring shares data with law enforcement in some cases, which bothers some people. Battery model needs recharging every 2-4 months depending on traffic.
Eufy Video Doorbell
The best option if you don't want a monthly fee. Eufy stores video locally on the HomeBase hub (16GB built in, no cloud required). No subscription needed to review recordings. The 2K resolution is sharp and the AI person detection works well.
Trade-off: the app is not as polished as Ring's, and smart home integration is more limited. Works with Google Home and Alexa but not as deeply as Ring works with Alexa. Battery life is similar (2-4 months) or you can wire it.
Wired vs Battery
If you have existing doorbell wiring (16-24V transformer, which most homes built after 1970 have), go wired. A wired doorbell camera never needs recharging, responds faster to motion events, and can ring your existing mechanical chime.
Battery is the only option for renters or homes without doorbell wiring. The install is genuinely easy (peel and stick or two screws) but recharging every few months gets old. If your doorbell sees a lot of traffic (busy street, high foot traffic), the battery drains faster and you might be recharging monthly.
